The Living Sober Farm of Ulster County was organized to own, operate and maintain housing in a farm community for residents of Ulster County, NY who are suffering from severe addiction issues and are transitioning from detox and rehabilitation services. We are an abstinence-based environment and require a strict code of no drugs or alcohol on the farm. The Farm is designed to provide a much-needed structured living environment in which residents live a healthy lifestyle and learn important job skills to improve their dismal odds of surviving. Living on the farm as a part of a family unit offers peer support and the therapeutic rewards of hard work and becoming part of a community. We strive to heal bodies, minds, and spirits offering the time needed to allow the brain's healing to occur.
We believe that abstinence is within reach and should be considered as a valid option of treatment and recovery. This belief is "evidence based" and has been found to be successful in long-term programs such as Physician Health Programs (PHP's). PHP's were created to help addicted physicians. There are similar programs for nurses, airline pilots and attorneys. These programs have been extraordinarily effective, providing the best prognosis for healing the dopamine reward system in the brain. Most are five year programs and studies have shown that the chances of long-term success increase with the number of years one maintains sobriety.
With most of today's treatment options, no more than 20 percent of people with severe addiction will be successful in moving on with their life. After three years of abstinence, studies have shown a 70 percent chance of long-tern success and after five years, that percentage jumps to 80%.
So why aren't we promoting the five year program? Money, it's always about money.
