The Living Sober Farm of Ulster County, Inc. is working hard to advocate for short-term and long-term recovery housing so that those suffering addiction(s) can have the choice to live a life commited to abstinence and be provided with all the support they need to increase their success at achieving long-term recovery. Too often, we only hear about harm reduction tools including medication assisted treatments. These treatments have helped reduce overdoses and have allowed people to live productive lives. These lives do not always have the quality of life that those in long-term recovery can achieve and this should not be the only option we can offer. Abstinence is possible but without a longterm support system, the odds of achievement are abysmal. Everyone should have a choice to live their life in sobriety and be supported for their commitment. There are many who are on medication and would like to live without it and there are many who have multiple addictions or are so deep in crisis addiction that they are not capable of being compliant. There are many who cannot afford the medication and/or who live so far away as to make it difficult to be compliant with medication and outpatient counseling. If we as a society have the means to offer this support, aren't we morally obligated to help? Who are we to decide that certain diseases are worth spending the money on and some are not? Addiction is killing more people than any other disease. If you combined deaths indirectly caused by addiction (accidents, suicides, etc.), the death toll is even higher.
