Dealing with family and friends can be exhausting. They mean well but neither understand or know what to say. Sometimes just a hug can speak a thousand words. This is why we advocate for intervention on behalf of the whole group made up of family/friends/patient. This is a group that is constantly traumatized by the behavior of the addict as he/she gets deeper into the dark hole of addiction. Family and friends want desperately to help but do not have the information necessary to help. Each one may have a different opinion on how to "fix" the patient. Intervention with the help of a professional is so important to the lives of all involved. Not a public group where the group gets the same talk, but a personalized, private group counseling in which treatment is customized for the patient and the family. We advocate that every family unit has a certified professional to take them on their dark journey. A professional that meets them on a regular basis and is available through any crisis that pops up. A professional that is able to customize treatment based on the needs of the group, to follow up and adjust through out the journey. One size does not fit all!
