An article by Dr. Stauffer published 10/28/23 reveals the very real brain injury suffered when a person survives an overdose.
Efforts so far have focused on preventing death from overdose, particularly through the use of naloxone. Studies have shown that naloxone has reversed many thousands of overdoses, the window for treating has gotten smaller because of the powerful new versions of drugs out there. In fact, most survivors of overdose through naloxone oftern die within a year. William Stauffer suggests that brain injury may be a major barrier to the healing process. Cerebral hypoxia is a condition where the brain does not get enough oxygen. This results in difficulty paying attention, poor judgement and decision-making and memory loss.
